Not sure when the drop dead date is for starting the Winter Classic for 2012 which involves the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs but it is likely in about a month.
The NHL begins hyping the game in early November. The teams release the jerseys to be used and filming of the HBO series 24/7 begins around then. Last year rink preparation at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia began on November 21 and HBO previewed 24/7 on November 25.
Once the Winter Classic is cancelled is there any incentive for an early settlement? I doubt it. What began as a financial dispute has quickly spun into an ideological dispute as the two sides become more entrenched.
Just another sign of how dysfunctional the NHL has become. After losing an entire season, most leagues would avoid cancelling games at all costs. Not the NHL.
